Dr. Marx spent the weekend of April 26-27 in Chicago at the Orthopaedic Learning Center as part of the faculty on the Athlete’s Knee Course. The course was designed for orthopedic surgeons who perform knee surgery on athletes. There was a distinguished faculty led by course coordinators Chris Kaeding from Ohio State University and Dr. Brad Nelson from the University of Minnesota. The topics covered were extremely broad, including ACL and PCL reconstruction as well as medial and lateral side reconstructions of the knee, medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, and high tibial osteotomy. Meniscal repair was also taught in addition to surgical techniques for cartilage repair in the knee.
Dr. Marx taught all of these techniques in the laboratory and gave a didactic lecture on posterolateral corner injuries, focusing on anatomy and surgical technique. Some of the highlights of the course were Dr. Greg Fanelli teaching multiligament knee reconstruction, Dr. Richard Parker teaching graft harvest techniques, and Dr. David McAllister teaching revision ACL reconstruction. There was a lot of time for questions and answers and the attendees as well as the faculty learned a lot over the weekend. Look out for more AOSSM surgical courses in the future.
